Question from Jessica:
I recently started my weight-loss and wellness journey, and wondered how often I should weigh myself and when the best time is to weigh myself.
Dear Jessica,
Thank you for your question! I’m so excited to hear that you’ve started your wellness journey. There’s no single “right” way to weigh yourself, but here’s what I usually recommend.
Weighing yourself at the start of your journey helps establish a baseline. If you choose to weigh daily, mornings are best, since fluid shifts throughout the day can affect the number. Treat it like part of your routine: step on the scale, note the number, and move on. Daily fluctuations are normal due to meals, sodium, hormones, and fluid balance — focus on net changes over a week.
If daily weigh-ins feel stressful, you can weigh once a week instead. Keep your routine consistent leading up to weigh-in day, and remember that natural fluid shifts can influence unexpected numbers.
Tracking body measurements or using a scale that measures body composition can also help you see progress beyond the scale. Fitness and nutrition changes may improve your shape, energy, sleep, and overall sense of well-being — even if the number on the scale doesn’t move as quickly as you’d like.
Working with a Registered Dietitian can help you interpret results, stay on track, and adjust strategies along the way. Wishing you all the best on your weight-loss and wellness journey!
Laura
